Die Luftfahrt ermöglicht eine weltweite Mobilität und erleichtert damit die Erschließung neuer Märkte. Somit gilt sie als Treiber der globalen Vernetzung und des internationalen Handels. Die Luftfahrt ist dank technologischer Fortschritte immer sicherer geworden. Mit dem Ausbau der internationalen Handelsabkommen und der Vielzahl an touristischen Möglichkeiten füllen in der zivilen Luftfahrt überwiegend die Reise- und Logistikbranche den Luftraum. Durch die sinkenden Kosten werden zunehmend auch schnelle Städteverbindungen und Reisekurztrips mit dem Flugzeug attraktiver. Ausgaben für Verteidigung wurden in den zurückliegenden Jahren generell reduziert, auch wenn die USA ihre NATO-Partner dazu angehalten hatte, mindestens 2 % des Bruttoinlandsproduktes dafür aufzuwenden. Der Konflikt in Europa zwischen Russland und der Ukraine hat die offenen Baustellen in diesem Bereich gezeigt. Inzwischen haben zahlreiche Staaten in Europa (aber auch weltweit) Milliardeninvestitionen für die Verteidigung angekündigt. Deutschland hat frische Mittel in Höhe von 100 Mrd. Euro für den Sektor beschlossen.
